Small-world organization

Crucial property of many natural and artificial networks, including the brain.

Combines the elevated clustering coefficient (typical of lattice networks, which are theorised to support specialized processing) with short characteristic path length typical of random networks (facilitating integration between different clusters).

May represent a mark of optimal balance between global and local processing (Bassett2017).

Implementation

small-world propensity

small-world character of the brain is compromised by loss of consciousness
