The magnet always remains on. On top of the magnet is a gradient coil, which apply variable magnetic fields in different directions. The radio frequency coils read out the magnetic resonance.

The magnet is a wire looped around, up to 20km of wire, that is cooled in liquid helium to make it superconducting for generation of strong magnetic fields.

In brain research, a head coil is often used to generate extra information.
