Linearity

A linear system is one which is, well, linear. But there’s more formal rules that a system must adhere to in order to be linear, namely:

• Additivity → $L(\vec{v}+\vec{w})=L(\vec{v})+L(\vec{w})$
• Scaling → $L(c\vec{v})=cL(\vec{v})$

In other words, linear transformations preserve the functions of vector addition and scaling.
