Psychedelics and criticality
In line with the Entropic brain hypothesis, psychedelics have been found to bring brain activity closer to criticality (Atasoy2017, Muthukumaraswamy2018, Varley2019), such that it reflects scale-free organization (Muthukumaraswamy2018)
- May be mediated by modulation (Muthukumaraswamy2018)
Opposite results were seen by Ruffini2023
- Fit fMRI data on psychedelics to an Ising model and found that Psychedelics bring the brain further from criticality, because it’s already poised above the critical point in the sober state (according to their model)
