Sterile inflammation is related to Immune-brain Communication and refers to inflammation resulting from interaction of danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) with immune cells. DAMPs are common proteins which are typically not associated with disease, but when found extracellularly, are assumed to arise from apoptosis or other processes which cause cell death or disruption.

  • DAMPs are recognized and bound to by immune cells with toll-like receptors.
