Phenomenon in which neurons “replay” sequences of firing from an experience, likely in order to assist in memory consolidation.
- Seen across multiple brain regions
- Likely contributes to planning of future behavior
- hippocampal networks are activated during episodic recall & imagination of fictitious experiences
- Sharp-wave ripples activate cells along both past & future trajectories
- Sequence of active sharp-wave ripple cells starts at current location and ends at goal location, followed by animal taking path defined by place cell activity.
- Still dependent on previous experience with environment and task rules
The replay phenomenon may support ‘mental time travel’ through spatial map, both forward and backward in time.
