Humans experience the world as a unified whole, or an integration of distinct sensory streams which are segregated (Tononi2004).
Information processed in parallel by segregated systems (domain-specific, e.g. the visual cortex) must be brought together and integrated, to guide adaptive behavior (Dehaene2011, Dehaene2011a, Luppi2020).
