Group dependency in statistical analysis

Independent groups subjects in one group do not provide information about subjects in another group.

  • Each group contains different subjects
  • Between-subject effects

Dependent groups subjects do provide information about subjects in other groups. Either they are the same set, or different subjects that have been paired meaningfully.

  • Crossover/counter-balanced design
  • Matched pairs (e.g. age/sex)
  • Within-subject effects
