Differences in T1 relaxation times of tissues
Relies on longitudinal relaxation
- Not all tissues return to equilibrium in the same amount of time, and T1 reflects the amount of time taken for protons’ spins to reliagn with the main magnetic field.
Tends to have short echo time (TE) and repetition time (TR) times
Fat quickly realigns longitudinal magnetization with $B_{0}$ so it appears bright on a T1w image, while water has much slower longitudinal magnetization realignment and has a lwoer signal.
