Long-term potentiation
High-frequency stimulation depolarizes the neuron through AMPA, releases Mg2+ block from NMDA and allows Ca2+ into the cell. This initiates a signal cascade with CaMKII that results in the exocytosis of AMPA receptors, resulting in stronger EPSPs/postsynaptic stimulation
How does the neuron decide which to do?
- Magnitude of calcium signal
- When Ca2+ entry is below threshold, it leads to LTD
