Type I (aka Hierarchical SS)
Type I, or hierarchical sum of squares, considers effects in a hierarchy. For example, the main effect of factor A may be considered of prime importance, followed by B, etc. So, factor A gets allotted all the variation attributable to A, including the parts that overlap with B and so on.
Choose Type I if and only if it’s obvious that Factor A has an effect on B but not vice versa.
Type III (aka Unique SS)
Allots only parts of variation to a particular effect that do not overlap with any other effects.
