Activity-dependent BDNF release stabilizes active synapses over inactive synapses.
Pure TrkB agonists result in increase in tonic activation of hebbian learning mechanisms which, over time, decrease the signal-to-noise ratio of active to inactive synapses. Conversely, activity-dependent mechanisms preserve and enhance signal-to-noise ratio by selectively increasing the stability of active synapses.
